Influences on Purchasing in the Thai Automotive Industry By: Preecha Wararatchai

Rationale of the Study  To investigate the supplier selection attributes in the Thai automotive industry  To examine the six factors that influence the supplier selection of buying center members.

Research Questions  What factors affect the supplier selection decision in the purchasing process of the companies in the automotive industry?  Which department are the most influence in making decision?  Is the proposed model appropriate for Thai automotive companies? And how it should be adjust?

Objectives of the Research  What factors affect the supplier selection decisions in the purchasing process of the companies in the automotive industry as perceived by their purchasing and production managers?  Which departments are involved and which one has the most influence in supplier selection decisions?

Scope of Research  population consists of 518 automotive firms,all of which are members of Thailand Automotive Institute (TAI)  The sample group comprises 350 member firms of the TAI randomly selected from the list.

Research Design and methodology  The sample group of 350 member firms of the TAI randomly selected from the list. Simple random sampling was used to choose the 350 sample firms.  Two groups of purchasing and production managers of the 350 firms are the units of analysis in this study.

 The survey questionnaire was developed based on relevant research studies.  The questionnaire included six factors identified the most affecting supplier selection.  The mail survey method was used to gathering the data.

Data analysis and examination of research question  The major findings of research question 1 indicate that both purchasing and production managers gave the similar high ranking attributes of the same factors.That is,product quality,price,after-sales service,delivery time and product information,were ranked as most important.

 The finding of research question 2 indicate that both purchasing and production manager gave the same ranking of attribute for the most influential departments in supplier selection decision,that is the top management.  The research question 3 indicate that the proposed research model of supplier selection appears to be relevant for the Thai automotive firms
