Positive Lifestyle Factors Lifestyle Factors: Personal behaviors and habits related to the way a person lives that help determine his/her level of health. Get between ___-___ hours of sleep a night. Eat nutritious foods from various food groups. Eat ___________________ everyday. Refrain from smoking and tobacco products. Do ______-______ minutes of continuous vigorous activity at least 3x per week. Do not use alcohol or other drugs. Maintain recommended weight. Experts have identified 7 habits that make a difference in peoples overall health, happiness, and longevity. People who regularly practice these important habits tend to be happier and live longer. Based on the three aspects of health, positive lifestyle factors, and preventative health, write a letter to younger generations letting them in on the secrets and details of a living a long, healthy, and satisfying life.

Physical Intellectual Prevalence of certain diseases ADHD, High blood pressure, Heart disease, Diabeties, Divorce, Drug abuse, mental disease, obesity

Risk Factor: Environment The SUM of all your experiences: Where you grew up Where you live now Where you go in a given day Physical conditions in which you live People in your life Your culture Is broken down into three categories: Physical, Social, & Cultural

Risk Factors: Physical Environment Your outdoor and indoor surroundings Outdoor Examples: air quality, pollutants, poisonous waste, radiation, noise, safety. Indoor Examples: electrical safety, fire alarms, school safety, exposure to asbestos, second hand smoke.

Risk Factors: Social Environment Includes your ___________ and other people with whom you come into contact with daily. Family Members: Why do they effect your social environment? Other people you come into contact with… Who? What changes as you get older? Why can this be good/bad? Social environment expands as you get older. Peers and friends who are supportive can help you grow socially and mentally. Those who take part in dangerous, unhealthy activities can put pressure on you to do things you otherwise may not.

Do Now: Taking everything that we have discussed so far in our wellness unit, what are some aspects of your health that you personally may need to work on? Try to think of at least one thing from physical, emotional/mental, and social and a preventative measure.

Risk Factors: Cultural Environment The beliefs, customs, and behavior of a group that are passed from generation to generation. Examples: _________________ Religion, food preference, traditions, language, etc Healthy goals can interfere with cultural beliefs…ex. If foods from your culture are very high in fat. Sometimes not aware of the characteristics of your culture until you interact with another…ex. No shoes in home, no eating meat, have an accent, etc

Risk Factor: Behavioral The decisions you make each day. You have little control over the other two risk factors (____________ and _________________), you have a great deal of control over your __________________. The way you choose to act in your environment has a very important impact on who you are.

Self Esteem Refers to how much you ______________ yourself and like yourself The level of ____________ and satisfaction in oneself. People can have High Self-Esteem or Low Self- Esteem People with high self esteem respect themselves and take care of themselves. Value themselves so are less likely to give into peer pressure. They set realistic goals for themselves and stick with them. Increased willingness to try and not be afraid of failure. Negative self esteem: insecure, vulnerable to peer pressure

Self Esteem People with High Self- Esteem: Form close relationships with people who respect and value them. Have a realistic view of their strengths and weaknesses Value themselves by taking care of themselves and their health and by avoiding risky behaviors. Have an increased ability to reach their goals People with Low Self-Esteem: Judge themselves harshly and worry too much about what others think May put on an act in public in order to impress others and hide their insecurities Vulnerable to peer pressure Feels depressed May use drugs and alcohol as a coping method Drop out of school Get Pregnant
