Overview  2011 Collapse  Ethics in the Locker Room  Players & Administration Involvement  Lack Of Leadership  Results Good Morning America

The Collapse 2011 Season Record (90-72) AL EASTWLPCT.GBHomeRoad NY Yankees __ Tampa Bay Rays Boston Red Sox Toronto Blue Jays Baltimore Orioles st team in history to have a nine-game lead in September and fail to make the playoffs

 Rays in Sox out  oJFc oJFc  ?v=6eMS_zrTliI&feature=fvwp&NR=1 ?v=6eMS_zrTliI&feature=fvwp&NR=1

Ethics in the Locker Room  Some team have permitted alcohol only after games and on flights.  There is a time and place for alcohol  Teammates are performing and you have guys in the locker room not supporting.  This is a bad message for kids and the image of the players.  Alcohol has a time and a place.

Players in the Mix  Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, and John Lackey Spent September eating biscuits and fried chicken, drinking beer, and playing video games in the clubhouse during games. These guys joined a hand full of others who decided to cut back on their exercise regimens.

Lack of Leadership  Administration  Players Dustin Pedroia quit leading. Tim Wakefield chasing his 200 th career win rather than team goals. Kevin Youkilis played injured most of the season saying Jacoby Ellsbury hadn’t the prior season.

Administration  Manager-Terry Francona spent all season living in hotel after separating from his wife of 30 years. Also taking left over pain killers from a 2010 knee surgery. No set contract for the 2012 season

Administration  General Manager-Theo Epstein In charge of signing free agent Carl Crawford as the highest paid outfielder in history ○ stole only 18 bases On the other hand Red Sox already had “speedy lefthanded-hitting outfielder” in Ellsbury

Administration  Owner- John W. Henry Hadn’t won a playoff game since 2007 When Henry bought team, they were a passion and priority to him, a championship driven team. Seem to have been more about promoting their brand rather than their baseball team, just another stock to add to Roush Racing and Liverpool

Results  Terry Francona – was declined to exercise 2012 option, but Hired by the Cleveland Indians for the 2012 season  Theo Epstein – Left and became the President of baseball operation at the Chicago Cubs  Jonathon Paplebon- (7yrs/ RedSox)signed with the Phillies in 2012  Bobby Valentine- in a 2012 report new manager said, “there is no beer in the clubhouse and no beer on the last leg of plane trips” Espn.com s

The End

 What year did the Red Sox’s experience an historic collapse?  2011
