Pg Pg 9Tk 9Tk j0 j0 What does the mis-en-scene tell us about the characters, situations, stories, moods. What are your conclusions about what the scene is about and how have you come to your decision?

1) Tells us that the characters are evil, as they are dressed in black, also the setting is lava which is related to hell, which also suggests evil. When Darth Vader is created, a white light beams down on him, showing he has been re-born, the background is still black showing he is evil. The extras are robots, suggesting that it is based in the future. 2) The old fashioned clothing and décor suggest that the scene is in the 1940’s, the lighting is darkish, showing the atmosphere in the room is tense. The man is trying to hide away from the woman, so he moves from out of the natural light into the corner where his face is dark from the shadow 3) The costumes and setting suggest that the party is for upper class people, by wearing suits and expensive looking dresses, we can tell the Acer is out of place. The extras also wear posh clothing. Props included expensive flowers, vases and other décor.

How Does Mise En Scene Help Audiences? Think of a favourite TV program/Film and consider one of its most memorable scenes/set pieces to answer this question.

Using your knowledge: Of mise-en-scene so far, write down the settings that you think might be used in: A historical drama A police drama A school drama A family drama For example: a hospital drama would use operating rooms, corridors, offices, homes, staff quarters, car park, etc. What would these sets be like? Old/new/modern/well equipped/stuffy?

Historical Drama: Book cases, candles, fire places, paintings, old fashioned, characters wearing old fashioned costumes, natural lighting so it feels like they didn’t have the technological advances that we have today. Police drama: Police station, police cars, police men/women extras, normal people walking past station to make it feel real. Dark-ish lighting to make the setting feel intense, base it in real police station. School Drama: Classrooms, everything that is in a school, lockers, teachers, students all in the same uniform, teachers wearing business clothing. Corridors, staff rooms, car park with cars with new-ish number plates, to show modern day, also have modern technology in class rooms. Family Drama: Modern day living room, with modern technology in, present day setting, costumes modern. Same set threw out so it is recognisable to people. An example of this is Eastenders.

Make up and Costume

Interpret Characters Review these characters and annotate them with as much detail as possible. Where do they live? What is their name? Age? Favourite food? Do they read? Favourite film? Do they go on holiday? Are they popular? Do they have siblings? Where would they shop for clothes? Food? Do they use the internet? Are they on Facebook? Etc etc!

Now design your own... Create a film character and annotate (just like we have done) – draw a picture by using photoshop and write down character traits. Print out and bring in for next lesson. (you can copy and paste a celebs head onto a different body for instance) Think about how you can use MIS-EN-SCENE to help you design a DVD menu in the future for a film you are considering to work with
