To Kill a Mockingbird Vocabulary List #1 1. ambled v.: to walk at a slow leisurely pace. Ex: Scout and Jem ambled home from school. 2.asssuaged v.: to lessen or calm Ex: Jem’s fears of not being able to play football were assuaged when the doctor assured him his broken arm would heal perfectly. 3.domicile n.: a house or place where a person lives. Ex: The Ewell’s domicile was a raggedy little house down near the town dump.

4.impudent adj.: shamelessly bold. Ex: Jem quickly decided to make an impudent move and return home to Atticus with- out his pants. 5.malevolent adj.: evil. Ex: The rumor around town was that a malevolent phantom lived in the Radley house who only came out at night. 6.piety n.: devotion to religion. Ex: Miss Stephanie Crawford showed her piety by attending church every Sunday.

7.predilection n.: preference for. Ex: Walter Cunningham has a predilection for putting maple syrup on his meat and potatoes. 8.unsullied adj.: untouched, unused, not dirty. Ex: Atticus’s hope of Scout returning from school unsullied was dashed when she came home in a muddy dress. 9.indigenous adj.: belonging to a particular region or country. 10.amiable adj.: friendly or likable. Ex: Jem Finch is an amiable boy who has lots of friends. 11.erratic adj.: irregular. Ex: The erratic stitching on Jem’s pants led him to believe that someone besides a woman had sewn them up. 12.gravely adv.: seriously. Ex: Atticus gravely lectured the children about making fun of others.

13.persevere v.: to carry on in spite of difficulties. Ex: Atticus Finch took Tom Robinson’s case hoping that he could persevere in spite of the town’s racism. 14.auspicious adj.: favorable. Ex: Tom was hopeful that his case would have an auspicious conclusion. 15.quell v.: to quiet or pacify. Ex: Mrs. Merriweather tried to quell the children’s nerves before they went on stage for the pageant.
