Jordan Ross Belfort “Wolf Of Wall Street”

Belfort’s Family Life Born in Queens, New York 1962 Lived in an apartment most of his life Father was an accountant Education: American University Began his own meat & seafood business in 1980 (didn’t work out) 1987 he began to work for a brokerage firm

Belfort’s Rise To The Top 1989 he began Stratton Oakmont Began company with Danny Porush (Azoff) He used a “pump and dump” scheme *pushed stocks onto clueless clients, which inflated the stocks' prices, then the company would sell off their own holdings in these stocks and make a profit. Police investigated him for years before he was convicted

Belfort’s Conviction 1992: U.S Securities/ Exchange Commission tried to end Stratton Oakmont (said they defrauded investors and manipulated stock prices) 1992-94’: Belfort and U.S securities “battle” as Belfort attempts to cover his tracks” 1996: Stratton Oakmont is liquidated 1999: Belfort pleads guilty to security fraud & money laundering http://www.thegentlemansjournal.com/property-live-like-jordan-belfort/

Belfort’s Conviction (continued) 2003: Sentenced 4 years in prison/ fined $110 million Convicted of security fraud/Money laundering He only served 22 months His inmate happened to be Tommy Chong, (He encouraged Belfort to write a book)

Anomie Theory Jordan Belfort’s reasoning behind his criminal history supports the Anomie Theory. Belfort could not achieve his goal in a short amount of time legally, so he broke the law. He did turn to illegal ways to become wealthy fast. Belfort went about his daily job while breaking the law; his daily job WAS to break the law. It wasn’t until law enforcement caught onto Belfort that he started to cover his tracks. Belfort showed rebellion while achieving his goal. He broke societies barriers to achieve his goal, and if someone was going to stand in his way he would work right through them. Jordan changed society and struck out against it by recruiting people to join his company, and using his smooth business tactics he robbed people blind of their money they believed was going into a stock that would earn them money.
