Anorexia Nervosa (AN) Anorexia is a psychological illness, which has a destructive effect on the body. AN is characterised by low body weight of an individual.

Types of Anorexia Nervosa Restricting type: Most common form of AN. Includes: Restricting food intake; only eating one meal per day. Follow inflexible rules; some individuals may only eat foods of a certain colour. Maintaining a very low calorie count. Binge eating or purging type: Less recognised. An individual confines their food intake, but also performs a binge-eating habit or commences purging behaviour. Includes: Over-exercising. Misuse of laxatives. Self-induced vomiting.

Physical Effects - Reduction in weight - Stunting of height and growth - Dry skin - Low blood pressure - Anaemia (Iron deficiency) - Zinc deficiency - Tooth decay - Fainting

Psychological Effects - Distorted body image - Low self-esteem - Mood swings - Self evaluation based mostly on weight and physical appearance.

Behavioural Effects - Excessive exercise - Food restriction - Substance abuse - Self harm - Aggression - Overly sensitive, in reference to weight or appearance
