Semester Exam Demo Project

The Carbon Snake Chemical Reactions: Powdered sugar reacts with sulfuric acid to produce carbon and water The reaction is exothermic, which means it releases a lot of heat as it takes place. This is known as a dehydration reaction because water is removed from the sugar during the reaction Because of the heat of the reaction, the water produced evaporates during the reaction leaving the solid carbon as a product

The Chemical Reaction C6H12O6 + H2SO4  12 C + 11 H2O + a mixture of acid and water + Heat ✚  ✚

Safety Wear gloves, an apron and goggles during the demo The demo should be performed in a fume hood due to the fumes released during the experiment Since heat is released during the reaction, make sure everythign has cooled down before you touch it or attempt to clean up the mess!
