GREEN-Ready to LearnAll students start here each day. BLUE-Think about your actions!This is a warning. PURPLE-Teacher’s Choice The teacher will determine a consequence, and parent will be notified.  There will be homework every night.  Students should complete one page a night in their Spelling/Grammar Packet that is due on Friday.  All students must read for 20 minutes each night, and fill out the reading log. Reading logs are due Friday. HOMEWORK

 Please sign your child’s planner each night as part of his/her homework. I initial the planner at the end of the day to ensure all assignments are written down and your initials show me that you are aware of those assignments and upcoming tests.  Signed planner and completed homework will earn your child a ticket.  Tickets will be cashed in at the ticket store at the end of each week.  This year, as a part of our balanced literacy program, we will be using the 6+1 Traits of Writing Framework. This includes: 1. Ideas 2. Organization 3. Voice 4. Word Choice 5. Sentence Fluency 6. Conventions +1 Presentation Students will write for authentic purposes, and learn to apply the writing traits to their own writing throughout the year. Writing Text Types: Informative/Explanatory Argumentative/opinion Narrative Writing

 Students will learn and practice answering short answer responses as well as extended responses using the CARE model.  Complete sentences and correct punctuation  Answer all parts of the question  Restate the question in the answer  Explicit evidence from the text to answer why English Language Arts

 One of my goals this year is to foster the love of reading in every student by finding books at their level they enjoy.  Students will be assigned goals for each quarter. Labels with their reading range and goals are in the student’s agenda.  There are several reward systems in place to encourage students to read.  This is a great reading comprehension program! Accelerated Reader

Social Studies Kentucky Based Program KY Government – students will create their own classroom government KY Regions/Geography KY Economics – students will create their own business KY Culture and Society KY State Explorers Historical Perspective

 There will be an English Language Arts test every Friday over the skills practiced that week (spelling, grammar, words of the day and reading). All skills can be found on the webpage.  Students will be able to use their notes and books on all Social Studies tests. Assessments

 Go Math teaches students to understand “why” and not just how to get an answer.  Aligned with the KY Core Academic Standards  We have begun using the new math program by printing workbook pages for Unit 1, and using the Go Math website.  We are expecting our resources to arrive by the end of September.  Next Generation Science Standards (new)  Kentucky has adopted new science standards, incorporating 21 st century learning skills. Aside from content standards, there are also now Engineering Practice Standards at each grade level.  For more information, see Science

 S.T.E.A.M.  Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math  Throughout the year, our classes will be requesting materials for our STEAM activities. The first one will be next week, and we are asking for pipe cleaners and aluminum foil. If you plan to donate, please send them in by next Wednesday, September 10 th. S.T.E.A.M.

BYOT Students will be permitted to bring their own device after the following occurs:  Complete Internet Safety and Digital Passport – we will be completing these in class on September 10 th and 11 th.  Parent and student watch an informational video from Mr. Detwiler about BYOT. Both must sign a paper stating the parent and student watched and understand the video.  The device must be registered online at the Stephens Website.
