IDIOPHONES MEMBRANOPHONES IDIOPHONES Idiophones do not have a membrane, instead the instrument itself vibrates. Examples: triangle, xylophones, castanets, maracas. Membranophones have a stretched membrane over a hollow shell. It is played using a mallet. Examples: snare drum, bongos, timpani. DRUM KIT The drum kit is basically membranophones and helps keep the time in a piece of music. It includes: a bass drum, a snare drum, some toms & the cymbals DID YOU KNOW? Bells are also a percussion instrument. Although, bells was originally made in China, many other countries use bells as well. For example, we especially use bells for ceremonies (churches, weddings).

Highest Lowest Violin Viola Cello Double Bass Within the piano, when a key is pressed a felt covered hammer hits one of the strings creating a sound. Each string has a fixed pitch but lower pitched strings are long and thin and high strings are the opposite. On a guitar, plucking is when a string is flicked with your thumb or a small piece of plastic. Pitch can be changed by pressing on the neck in different areas. The lyre is the oldest kind of strings which was popular with ancient Greeks. Bow- strong, flexible stick with horse hair stretched onto it. Resonator- amplifies sound waves to make it and fuller.

A wind instrument is any instrument you play by blowing through it. However, not all wind instruments are made out of brass. The are simply long metal tubes. The longer the pitch the lower the pitch. To play a brass instrument your lips have to be pursed to create a buzzing noise. You must make your lips vibrate. The tighter the higher but the looser the lower. Buzzing lips against mouth piece causes the tube and air inside it to vibrate creating a clear sound (tone). Valve instruments: -Trumpet (hits the highest of notes) -Tuba (hits the lowest of notes) -French Horn (hardest to master) Slide instrument: -Trombone (changes pitch by sliding tube up and down) Natural instrument: -Bugle ( no valves or slide and has a limited range of notes. Not used often.)

Woodwind instruments are not all made out of wood but require wind to make a noise. They are basically tubes with holes along it. To make music air is blown into the instrument through the mouthpiece. These type of instruments would not be able to be played without this. Woodwinds have a reed, which is made out of bamboo ( a type of wood). It is the vibrating air produced inside, blown through the reed within the mouthpiece. Covering the holes is similar to making the tube longer therefore the pitch becomes lower. Edge-blownAir is blown over an edge Flutes and recorders Single-reedVibration to get air inside Clarinets and saxophones Double-reedProduces even more vibration Oboes
