EMERY PARK SCHOOL English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) School Advisory Committee (SAC) 1

Requirement for an ELAC CA Code of Regulations--Title 5 §11308: Each school with more than 20 English learners must establish an ELAC. 2

Purpose of an ELAC To be a voice for English learners and ensure that their needs are addressed in order for them to be academically successful. 3

Parent Selection Requirement The parents or guardians of English learners must be provided the opportunity to vote and elect the parent members of the ELAC. 4

ELAC Responsibilities Advise the principal and staff on the school’s program for English learners. Advise the School Site Council on the development of the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) 5

English Learner Information AMAO (Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives) Background We receive federal funding to help English Language Learners. We need to help ELs learn how to speak, read, and write in English. We need to help ELs achieve in reading and math. Each year, the federal government reviews our students’ test scores in CELDT… (CELDT and CAHSEE for high school). AMAOs are part of NCLB. District scores are examined. 6

Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives Objective 1 Progressing in English Language Acquisition Requires that a defined percent of students make adequate progress towards English proficiency (EA,A) from one year to the next on the CELDT. B  EI EI  I I  EA The target – 60.5% make progress towards English proficiency 69.2% (45/65)of our ELL made progress We met this objective 7

Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives Objective 2 Requires that a defined percent of students attain English proficiency each year. 2 groups o EL students in language instruction programs for LESS than 5 years. o EL students in language instruction programs for MORE than 5 years 8

Decision for Placement of English Learners CELDT: -California English Language Development Test - Used to identify and measure progress -Assesses Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing in English -Survey is used to identify students to take CELDT -Required by law -Finished testing all students this week 12
