Key understanding Due to the use of unsustainable energy, ocean acidification is a rising problem for marine ecosystems. The high levels of pH (acidity) in the water alters the natural chemical bonding process in regards to the building of shells and exoskeletons of marine wildlife. The rising level of ocean acidification is the cause of many problems that affect both marine wildlife and human well-being.
