Socratic The word Socratic is an adjective formed from name of the philosopher Socrates.

Socratic question-and-answer Socrates was famous for using the question-and-answer method in his search for truth and wisdom.

Seminar seminar small group of students engaged in intensive study A seminar is a term used to describe a small group of students engaged in intensive study.

The Vision deeper understanding dialogue or talking  Participants seek deeper understanding of complex ideas through dialogue or talking, rather than by memorizing bits of information. TALKING vs. MEMORIZATION

Four Elements to the Seminar  An effective seminar consists of four interdependent elements: text 1.the text being considered questions 2.the questions raised leader 3.the seminar leader, and participants 4.the participants

Remember: This is a Conversation NOT a Debate! NEW IDEAS  We must all be open to NEW IDEAS  Not everyone thinks alike open mind learning new things  Keep an open mind to learning new things and thinking about ideas in new ways

Seminar Roles  Inner Circle:  Inner Circle: share experiences, ideas, and reflections.  Outer Circle:  Outer Circle: gain insights, form opinions, and generate questions.  Everyone:  Everyone: has an opportunity to develop an increased understanding of various viewpoints.
