Warmup 11/30/15 Do plants have to reproduce through seeds? See if you can think of a plant that doesn't Objective Tonight’s Homework To learn how plants reproduce asexually pp 330: 1, 2, 3, 4

Notes on Asexual Plant Reproduction Many plants can reproduce asexually – that is – without combining male and female gametes. This produces an offspring which is genetically identical to the parent.

Notes on Asexual Plant Reproduction Underground Reproduction Many plants’ roots are more like stolons or rhizomes. Plants with root systems like this can send up new stems at a number of locations.

Notes on Asexual Plant Reproduction Underground Reproduction Many plants’ roots are more like stolons or rhizomes. Plants with root systems like this can send up new stems at a number of locations. Example: Mint If you plant a sprig of mint, you will soon find new mint plants popping up nearby. Each of these is, in fact, part of the same plant with one shared root system. But each can also live independently if you cut one off from the rest.

Notes on Asexual Plant Reproduction There are many other plants that spread this way: Iris, bamboo, lilac, elderberry, grass, aspen…

Notes on Asexual Plant Reproduction Stem Reproduction The other method of asexual reproduction is through stems. Many plants like strawberry asexually reproduce this way.

Notes on Asexual Plant Reproduction Stem Reproduction The other method of asexual reproduction is through stems. Many plants like strawberry asexually reproduce this way. Strawberry will send runner stems along the ground. When the stems find favorable conditions, they send out roots into the ground. This creates a second plant that can survive on its own.

Notes on Asexual Plant Reproduction We can speed this along with a process called “layering”. In layering, stems are purposefully bent to the ground or submerged to induce the plant to reproduce asexually. Once the stem is underground, the plant will often send out roots at the submerged location

Brochure: Making a Thriving Garden We’re going to start an activity today that you’ll have a fair amount of time to work on this week. We’ve learned a lot about plants. As such, I want you to start creating a brochure on how to make a thriving garden with an increasing population of plants. Your brochure will have 3 pages: - Asexual Plant Reproduction - Sexual Reproduction: Flowers - Sexual Reproduction: Seeds Your job today is to work on just the first page. Each page should include specific directions.

Exit Question Which of the following is a definition of "layering"? a) When stems from plants can create new roots in soil b) When roots from plants create new stems c) When plants move towards or away from something d) When plants reproduce asexually e) When you stack things on top of other things f) None of the above
