WHY DID THE US ENTER WW1 The British passenger liner Lusitania was sunk by a German U-boat was the Lusitania. 128 Americans were killed by this action. German policy of Unrestricted Submarine Warfare Germany declared the area around the British Isles a war zone, in which all merchant ships, including those from neutral countries, would be attacked by the German navy.
