Unity, Diversity, & Evolution

Unity All Life Forms Have Common Features

Common Properties of Life

Made of Cells Basic unit of structure & function

Maintain a constant internal environment (homeostasis) Examples: temperature, sugar level, salt level, hydration, etc.

Metabolism Total of all chemical reactions. Examples:

Respond to Stimuli Examples:

Reproduce Essential to survival of species.

Heredity & Evolution Heredity: Traits passed to offspring. Info found in DNA.

Evolve Evolution: Change in species over generations.

Grow and Develop

Growth- change in number of cells which leads to increase in size. Development- change in a single individual during life cycle.

Cells- Similar but Different

Diversity Life is arranged into 3 Domains

Evolution Explains the Unity & Diversity of Life

Charles Darwin Descent with Modifications Natural Selection

2 Observable Features Individual Variation Unequal Reproductive Success
