1. On a warm hot summer’s day Josie and her brother Caleb sat on a bench eating their ice cream they had just bought from Nickelson’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor. 2. Caleb asked his sister, “Who invented ice cream?” 3. Josie thought about Caleb’s question for a moment and then replied,“I don’t know. Maybe we should go ask Mrs. Nickelson!” 4. Josie and Caleb ran into the ice cream store and went right up to the counter.

5. : “Mrs. Nickelson! Mrs. Nickelson!” the children shouted, “What can I do for you?” Mrs. Nickelson asked “Who invented ice cream?” the kids chimed in. “Well that’s a long story children, here, have a seat and I’ll tell you all about it”. It started long ago… 6. Ice cream can be traced back to Alexander the Great around the 2 nd century BC. Alexander the Great was a Greek king of Macedon 7. He would order snow and ice to be flavored with honey and nectar. 8. During the Roman Empire around 60BC, Emperor Nero would send runners into the mountain for snow which he would also have flavored with fruits and juices.

9. “Hey that’s not fair! My mom doesn’t allow us to eat snow!” Caleb pouted. 10. “No mommy only says not to eat yellow snow” Josie said, “and that’s because-” 11. “Anyway… Today, people around the world enjoy ice cream, just like you and me!” 12. “Here, let’s take a look!”

13. In the mountains of Venezuela there is an ice cream shop named Coromoto Ice Cream Shop. It has over 800 flavors. 14. Some include the exotic rice and beans, cold duck, carrot, and spagetti and cheese. 15. “Ew carrot ice cream!” said Caleb “I don’t know if I could eat that” “You never know what you like until you try it” said Mrs. Nickelson. She continued on with her story. 16. In Taiwan they have shaved ice or bao bing. It is made out of shaved milk ice. Each vendor sells different toppings that you can choose from fresh fruit to red beans to chocolate

17. In Italy they have gelato. It is a smooth dessert. It comes in fruity flavors as well as cream flavors such as hazelnut and chocolate. 18. In Japan they make Mochi. Mochi is made out of rice and ice cream. It has a gooey outer shell and ice cream inside. 19. Popular flavors include green tea, chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. 20. “My favorite flavor is cotton Candy!” Said Caleb.

21. “My favorite flavor is Moose Tracks” Said Josie. 22. “Do you want to know what my favorite flavor is?” Asked Mrs. Nickelson. “Yes! Yes!” yelled the children. 23. “All the flavors” Said Mrs. Nickelson. The children and Mrs. Nickelson laughed together. 24. “Oh look at the time,” said Mrs. Nickelson. “You best be off home. Oh, and don’t forget your umbrellas it looks like it is going to rain!”

25. The children got into their rain gear and waved goodbye 26. Mrs. Nickelson closed up her store for the day. 27. Quickly Mrs. Nickelson grabbed a cup and a spoon and scooped herself a bowl of ice cream 28. “Mmmhmmm” Mrs. Nickelson smiled.
