How Does Error Survive In The Face of Truth?

2 Timothy 3:1-9 (NKJV) 1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

2 Timothy 3:1-9 (NKJV) 6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; 9 but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was.

Why Do So Many Resist The Truth? Error: Appeals to the carnal mind Appeals to the desires of the flesh Appeals to pride Appeals to human wisdom Appeals to the emotions Appeals to the lazy & ignorant Appeals to the carnal mind . . . Romans 8:7 (NKJV) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. The health & wealth doctrine . . . Jehovah Witnesses doctrine of heaven on earth . . . Denominationalism - 1 Cor. 3:3-4 (NKJV) for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? [4] For when one says, "I am of Paul," and another, "I am of Apollos," are you not carnal? Appeals to the desires of the flesh . . . 2 Tim. 3:1-5 (NKJV) But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: [2] For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, [3] unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, [4] traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, [5] having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! Permits immorality Permits laziness & indifference Appeals to pride . . . 1 Tim. 6:4 (NKJV) he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, “God has given me special insight” Desire to be with the popular group . . . Appeals to human wisdom . . . Col. 2:8,18 (NKJV) Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. . . . [18] Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, Romans 1:21-22 (NKJV) because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. [22] Professing to be wise, they became fools, 1 Cor. 3:19 (NKJV) For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, "He catches the wise in their own craftiness"; Appeals to the emotions . . . Proverbs 14:12 (NKJV) There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. Appeals to the lazy & ignorant 2 Tim 2:15 . . . Acts 17:11,12

Why Do So Many Resist The Truth? Truth Is Not Desired Isaiah 30:10-11 (NKJV) 10 Who say to the seers, "Do not see," And to the prophets, "Do not prophesy to us right things; Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits. 11 Get out of the way, Turn aside from the path, Cause the Holy One of Israel To cease from before us."

Why Do So Many Resist The Truth? Truth Is Not Desired Jeremiah 5:30-31 (NKJV) 30 "An astonishing and horrible thing Has been committed in the land: 31 The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule by their own power; And My people love to have it so. But what will you do in the end?

How Does Error Survive In The Face of Truth? Due To Perversion To defend error, one MUST pervert or twist scripture – 2 Peter 2:1-3; 3:16; Psalm 56:5; Gal 1:6-9; Acts 13:10; 1 Tim. 4:1-3 Error contradicts both truth & error – BUT, truth never contradicts itself!
