PRINCIPLES OF EXERCISE

Target: I will be able to describe the 6 Principles of Exercise. Pg. 35 If you want to improve any aspect of your physical performance, you need to adhere to the exercise principles. Principles of Exercise: 1. Principle of Overload: Working the body harder than it normally works in order to gain fitness benefits. Apply an overload to either your muscles or your cardiovascular system Doing more repetitions, sets, distance, time, or weight

2. Principle of Progression: Gradual increase in overload (intensity) to keep increasing your level of fitness. Training Threshold- minimum amount of overload required for fitness benefits. Training Zone- ideal range of overload for improving fitness Training Ceiling- upper limit of overload to obtain fitness benefits.

3. Principle of Specificity: A workout should include a specific type of exercise to obtain the desired fitness benefits. 4. Principle of Regularity: Working out on a regular basis for improvement to happen. Fitness benefits are lost when the exercise stops

5. Principle of Recovery- Giving your body adequate time to recover after strenuous workouts. 6. Principle of Individual Differences: Exercise programs are not one size fits all. You are unique and must take into account what is best for your body type, level of health, and your strengths and weaknesses. Summary:
