Warwick Valley Central School District Strategic Planning Process October 25, 2010

Where we started Two years ago, the Board of Education (BOE) saw difficult times ahead, economically and in the need to move toward 21 st Century Learning

BOE recognized the need for: –Long-term planning, necessary in order to make good, effective decisions –Community engagement in order to be more effective as a group –Process by which to engage the community

Community 20/20 Formed in Jan., 2009 Is a BOE committee composed of district and community members Was formed to create permanent framework for communication between BOE and Community Mission Statement: To develop a vision of shared values in regard to Warwick Valley Central School District’s educational community

Community 20/20 Goals: –To extract a global value system in regard to our educational system that accurately reflects our community –To develop a sense of community ownership by facilitating a pathway for communication between the BOE and the Community

What we’ve done Community Forums, Community Survey

Through these mediums, the Board of Education … Has identified and begun addressing the following concerns of the community: Academics Technology Social concerns affecting students

Community Forums, Community Survey Reaching out to the community, the Board of Education … Has found that the Warwick community values a good education Warwick residents believe it is necessary to focus on academics in order to bring about student success - now and in the future

Community Forums, Community Survey In the process, the Board of Education … Forged a relationship with the community that is interactive Gained valuable information regarding the public’s outlook Was able to craft a budget last year around input from the community

Board of Education Summer 2010 Work During this past summer, the BOE:  Identified a desire to promote a supportive culture in our school district  Identified the necessity of utilizing data to further confirm goals  Identified skills students need to be successful in the 21 st Century  Through discussions based on academic research and data, made decision to develop Strategic Plan

Where we are now Strategic Planning Process The BOE will hold a series of Strategic Planning Meetings with Community members First meeting – Sept. 20 Tony Wagner’s “Global Achievement Gap” - Eight Standards for Success Second meeting - Tonight

Where we are now Strategic Planning Process The Board of Education will continue to engage the Community regarding the main issues affecting the WVCSD: Right now: ACADEMICS Short term: BUDGET Long term: STRATEGIC PLAN

Where we are now Strategic Planning Process Develop a strategic plan with the Community that will serve as a guide for future Board of Education decisions

Where we are going Use Strategic Plan to inform Board of Education decisions going forward Through Strategic Plan, educate students for the 21 st Century Achieve level of solidarity with the Community through a mutually-created Strategic Plan Make budget decisions with Strategic Plan in mind

BOE-Community GOAL To become, despite difficult economy and challenges in striving to successfully educate 21 st Century Learners, as robust a school district as possible
