Psychology Warm Up November 9, 2011 Do you think there are any benefits to relaxation techniques like meditation or hypnosis? Describe the ways you think these would be helpful.

Altered States of Consciousness Main Idea – A variety of techniques have been developed in order to achieve altered states of consciousness. Question – How do meditation and biofeedback work? Question – What is hypnosis? Question – How can hypnosis be used?

Altered states of consciousness Meditation – narrow the consciousness so that the outside world fades away. Biofeedback – system that provide or “feeds back” data about something happening in the body. – People can learn to control bodily functions, such as heart rate.

Altered states of consciousness Hypnosis – altered state of consciousness in which people respond to suggestion. – Hypnosis is not being asleep, they are different brain waves. – People focus on the suggestion of the hypnotherapist.

Hypnosis Myths You cannot be hypnotized against your will. When hypnotized you can’t open your eyes. You cannot remember your own name. You act out scenes from childhood. You behave in unusual ways. You will do anything. You go into a sleepy state. Facts No one can be hypnotized unless willing. Hynotizing dulls, but doesn’t affect normal functioning of senses. You can remember everything as normal. You usually behave quite normally. You are unlikely to do anything you wouldn’t normally do. You stay conscious and alert.
