Defining Your Interest  Formulate your interest into a program or project  Clarify your Objectives / Develop an Hypothesis  Write up brief concept paper.  Be flexible in matching with funder goals.  Establish a Timeline for the Project  Estimate your effort  Estimate budget 3

Sample Timeline for Proposal Development  4 months prior to deadline: Identify funding opportunity (RFP, PA, …).  Read completely and carefully.  How can your project assist the sponsor in meeting their goals?  Discuss with colleagues / collaborators / chair.  3 months prior to deadline:  Contact CSBS Grants Officer to draft budget.  Prepare abstract, define methodology. Contact consultants, CARE, if needed.  2 months prior to deadline: Write narrative pieces according to sponsor instructions.  3 weeks prior to deadline: PAF for internal approvals. (chair)  2 weeks prior to deadline: Dean’s office  4 days prior to deadline: Final package to ORSP. 5
