Science and Faith in the Life of a Believer Anna Pearson CiS Student Conference Feb 2016

a)“Church on a Sunday, work on a Monday. One relies on faith, another on facts – they couldn’t possibly affect each other. Keep them separate and everything works fine.” b)“God wants me to do science to reach my Atheist course mates, my degree is just my excuse to be at uni to help out with the CU.” c) “God might call me to be a missionary or a priest, or even a doctor but never to do full time research – that’s a secular job. I do science because I love it but I make sure I help out enough at church to make up for not having a Christian job” or even d)“Science is evil as it’s humanity’s attempt to do away with God/become God.” e) “Religion is old superstition left over from the past and now that we have reached enlightenment and can behave and learn about the universe in a rational manner – scientific progress is the only thing that will help humanity”

The two main issues at stake: The value of secular work vs. Church work Science being able to save humanity vs. science being completely evil

1 Kings 4: “God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezrahite—wiser than Heman, Kalkol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations. He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five. He spoke about plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also spoke about animals and birds, reptiles and fish. From all nations people came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom. ”

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” Psalm 19:1-4 “For since the creation of the world, God’s eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” Romans 1:20

“Give up everything you have and follow me” Mark 10:21 para “Present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.” Rom 12:1 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Col 3:23 “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfil his good purpose” Phil 2:13

1 Cor 12: Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!”

Do I separate my church life and my everyday life? Do I currently have any questions about how science and faith fit together that I’ve been avoiding that I need to work through? (evolution was a big one for me) Is God calling me to a life of research/scientific policy/something related to my current studies? If any of you would like to chat or pray about things then please come and speak to me afterwards.
