Interventions Targeting Vulnerable Groups in Swaziland by Nhlangano AIDS Training Information and Counseling Centre (NATICC) Thabani Ndlovu

BRIEF HISTORY Was founded in 2002 and is being funded by the Norwegian government. It is situated on the southern region of the country. Its services includes; HTC HIV prevention Care and support

PREVENTION ACTIVITIES In CSWS were identified and trained as peer educators to operate at the border post of Lavumisa and Zululand ( South Africa). Lavumisa town has a population of about 3000 people. Partnered with Government to conduct a situational analysis on sex work in 2007 as well as to train CSWs in other regions in 2008 Training of peer educators for same sex partners There are both part-time and full time sex workers. Peer educators give health education on HIV/AIDS to long distance truck drivers and to other sex workers.

Also distribute IEC material and condoms at the border gate everyday by mounting both mobile and static information desk. They wear T-shirts, caps and carry bags with different messaging as a way of avoiding the police. A team of 5 members offers the above services for a month and they are given a stipend of R300 to be able to buy food. Ongoing and end of year evaluation would be done. Income generating activities.

CHALLENGES It is difficult to reach their clients besides the long distance truck drivers. Advocacy vs. population size of the town Lack of staff capacity building. Poor linkages and partnerships. Lack of funding LEASONS LEANT CSWS can be rehabilitated back into society if the communities do participate.

Thank you
