Karissa Thomson LOWERING TUITION AT HAMLINE UNIVERSITY: A FEASIBILITY STUDY ENGLISH 1800: INTRO TO PROFESSIONAL WRITING AND RHETORIC

 Introduction  Methods and Results  Conclusions  Recommendations OVERVIEW

 Examined the feasibility of lowering tuition for students attending Hamline University  Researched and compared nearby colleges to Hamline - tuition costs - enrollment numbers - broad financial breakdowns - amount of faculty - average pay of faculty  Researched what students thought about tuition costs, and ways to lower tuition  Researched rentable spaces at Hamline and their costs INTRODUCTION

 Researched online through multiple websites, such as IPEDS  Located articles online about the rise in college tuition  Dispensed and received surveys to and from classmates - feelings about the price of tuition - ways to lower tuition - if outlook on Hamline would change based on tuition - ways students pay for tuition - ways to lower tuition  Interviewed friends who attend Hamline about their thoughts on tuition METHODS

 It was found that Hamline relies more on tuition for revenue than neighboring colleges do, at 76%  Results to some questions for the survey found: - most students worry frequently about tuition costs - 86% of students feel that tuition costs are too high - Most students feel that their outlook on Hamline would change if costs were lowered  Research results include: - Hamline enrollment is 4,581, tuition is $35,108 - St. Thomas enrollment is 10,192, tuition is $35,308 - St. Catherines, Bethel, and St. Thomas depend on less than 67% of tuition for revenue RESULTS

 Hamline students depend on more than just one method of payment for paying tuition, including loans, scholarships, grants, out of pocket payments, and work study programs  From the survey: - Students wrote that the best ways to lower tuition would be to fundraise, rent out rentable facilities, and hire more adjunct faculty  The number of faculty at Hamline is high, with a low amount of educational staff RESULTS

STUDENT OPINIONS

MAKING PAYMENTS TOWARDS TUITION

 Students at Hamline University frequently worry about tuition rates  Potential ways to lower tuition would be to fundraise, hire more adjunct faculty, and rent out available spaces  Although students said fundraising was an option, only half of them would be willing to do so  In order to determine the feasibility of lowering tuition, further research is needed CONCLUSIONS

 More research would be required in order to produce a concrete answer as to the feasibility of the topic at hand  Further research is recommended: - more detailed financial breakdown of Hamline - more opportunities in fundraising be acquired - enrollment increase/more advertisement - find out costs of renting out spaces RECOMMENDATIONS
