Manatee by wonderful Martina!

Features Hello I'm Miss Martina manatee. I weigh about 800kg and I am 3.6m long. One of my cool features is two small flippers that helps me steer. At the end of my flippers there are finger nails. You can see that I have hair on my snout, and paddle-shaped flippers. I am often gray-brown, our babies are dark gray to brown and m long, they weigh kg,bigger then most first graders! My skin is balloon-like and wrinkled, I have small ears and small wide-set eyes.

Where do you live? Well I live in Florida and the coasts of North America. You will also find me in shallow waters in rivers and canals. But I only live in warm water. Also if water gets cold in estuaries I move to warmer rivers or canals.

What I like to eat? Well, my favourite food is water plants. I use my forelimbs and prehensile lips to feed me. Unlike most mammals,I replace my teeth which are actually only molars after they wear down. It takes me about one week to complete my digestion.

How are my young born? Well, that´s a good question! Our babies are born alive. After about 12 months of development in their mothers, a calf is born.

How are my young born? I take care of my baby by teaching it how to find food and a warm place to hide or rest. Our young are about 1.1-3m long and weigh 27-32kg. They are bigger than most first graders. The calf always stays close to us so we always know where they are. Did you know us mothers can give birth at 3 years old? The little manatees stay with us mothers for 2 years and drink their mother's milk under water.

Who are your enemies? Luckily, I only have one natural enemy, this is the alligator. The way I protect myself is to stay in shallow water so if I get attacked it's very hard for the attacker to drag me under water longer than 15mins. This amount of time is OK because us manatees can stay under water for 20. before we have to breathe.

Are you endangered? Sadly, the rumours are true I'm endangered! But the part that hurts the most is it's all because of you. Long age you foul people used to hunt me for my skin which you used for leather and my blubber for oil. You also ate me long ago. But even now you find ways to hurt me. Some people use power boats and drive over me. I can't see you doing this and it can kill me or badly hurt me! At least the law protects me now.
