What is Creativity? How can it be measured?

Creativity – noun 1.the state or quality of being creative 2.the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships etc and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations; originality, progressiveness, or imagination 3.the process by which one utilises creative ability: extensive reading stimulated his creativity

Questions to consider Can you follow conventions yet still be creative? Can creativity be taught or learnt? How do you give creativity direction? Is creativity better if it is controlled in some way(s)?

Pete Fraser, Chief Examiner OCR Creativity is the hardest one in many ways because it involves thinking about what the creative process might mean. Wikipedia describes it as "a mental process involving the discovery of new ideas or concepts, or new associations of the existing ideas or concepts, fueled by the process of either conscious or unconscious insight." For your projects it might involve considering where ideas came from, how you worked collaboratively to share ideas, how you changed things or even how you used tools like the programs to achieve something imaginative.

Skills Development Each task you have carried out during the A- Level course should have demonstrated more creativity than the preceding ones How has each of your tasks shown this progression? What factors allowed/ enabled you to be more creative?

Things to consider: Where your ideas & inspiration came from Compromises you had to make due to constraints (time/ locations/ equipment/ expertise) How much you feel these compromises affected your finished productions – how big a disparity was there between what you imagined your productions would look like and the actual outcomes?

Personal influences In Media Studies your coursework is often influenced by your social/ cultural/environmental/ biographical background and ideas – have you tried to expand the boundaries of the social norm? How?

Consider Why do media industries and institutions want/need to know as much as they can about trends and habits of the public? How did knowing more about your target audience enable you to address them better? How did audience feedback add to/ detract from your creativity? How do you feel your own views/ attitudes/ ideals influenced your ideas and outcomes?
