A Record of Evolution? SWBAT discuss the purpose of evolutionary family trees and present arguments against them; give several examples of homologous structures proposed by evolutionists and explain them from a Creationist perspective; explain what is meant by “the fossil record” and describe evolutionist’s view of fossil formation

Evolutionary Family Trees  Evolutionary family tree – lining up groups to show a path of biological evolution  How would a family tree be similar to an evolutionary family tree? –They both ancestors. They both need to have a common ancestor that created each branch

Missing Links  What is a missing link? –An “in-between” organism, that would have lived if one type of organism evolved into another  Homologous structures –Common similarities that species share due to common ancestors  What are the problems that arise when scientists study homology? –They disagree on what should be considered homologous –Embryo development is different even though the structures they produce are considered homologous. They are linked to different genes

Evolution and the Fossil Record  What is the fossil record? –A record of past living things preserved in layers of rock  List the reasons that the fossil record does not support biological evolution. –Nowhere have scientists found a complete or uniterrupted series of fossil layers –There is no fossil representation of missing links –There is evidence to support the layers of fossils being laid down over a short period of time.

Get your lab notebooks  In your groups compare the various evolutionary family trees on page SA101  Look for differences in evolutionary paths and compile a list.
