BUTTONS LESSON 1 LESSON 2 LESSON 3 QUIZ QUESTION 1 QUIZ QUESTION 1 LESSON 4 QUIZ QUESTION 2 QUIZ QUESTION 2 QUIZ QUESTION 3 QUIZ QUESTION 3 CONCLUSION

LESSON 1 ANIMAL SURVIVAL TACTICS INTRO STANDARD MET: SCI Classify living organisms according to variations in specific physical features (e.g., body coverings, appendages) and describe how those features may provide an advantage for survival in different environments. For example: bears can adapt to harsh winters by hibernating, and humpback whales migrate from their nurseries off the coast of Hawaii to feed in the krill-rich waters off of Alaska, camels can survive in extremely high and dry temperatures. OUR FOCUS: HOW POLOR BEARS USE THEIR BLUBBER TO SURVIVE IN LOW TEMPERATURES

LESSON 2 POLAR BEAR SURVIVAL Warm blooded Insulation. Two layers of fur provide polar bears with such excellent insulation that their body temperature and metabolic rate won't change even when temperatures reach -34º F. Compact ears and a small tail also help prevent heat loss. A polar bear's body temperature is 98.6º F—average for mammals. Polar bears have more problems with overheating than they do with cold. That's why they walk at a leisurely pace. They quickly overheat when they run.

LESSON 3 BODY AND BLUBBER EXAMPLE! How do they use blubber to keep themselves warm?

LESSON 4 FUN FACTS!

LESSON 5 SURVIVAL SKILLS Polar bears live in one of the planet's coldest environments and depend on a thick coat of insulated fur, which covers a warming layer of fat or blubber. The blubber is the main reason the Polar Bears are able to withstand such extreme temps. Fur even grows on the bottom of their paws, which protects against cold surfaces and provides a good grip on ice. The bear's coat provides a camouflage in surrounding snow and ice. But under their fur, polar bears have black skin that helps attract the sun.

QUIZ QUESTION 1 WHAT IS THE MAIN REASON THE POLAR BEARS HAVE BLACK SKIN? The black part helps the polar bears camouflage. The black part attracts the sun keeping them warm in cold temperatures

CORRECT!!!! Yes this is true polar bears have a black layer of skin to help them stay warm because it attracts the sun! QUIZ QUESTION 2

INCORRECT Sorry please try again! The Polar Bears live in snow and ice so having black skin would not help them camouflage! TRY AGAIN

QUIZ QUESTION 2 What is the most discussed and main reason polar bears can stay warm in the coldest temperatures? Polar Bears have a layer of skin called blubber. It is the largest layer and made of fat to protect them from the cold. Polar bears have white fur that keeps them warm, but only the white fur, not yellow.

CORRECT!!! Yes! Polar bears depend mostly on the thick layer of blubber that dominates in size compared to the other layers of skin! QUIZ QUESTION 3

INCORRECT Sorry the fur does help the polar bear stay warm, but it is not the main reason, and the color does not matter when trying to keep warm! Try again! TRY AGAIN!

QUIZ QUESTION 3 What is the another function of the white fur of the Polar Bear? Camouflage To help them protect from predators

CORRECT!!! YES! The white fur of the Polar Bear helps them camouflage in snow and ice! QUIZ QUESTION 3

INCORRECT Sorry the white fur has nothing to do with polar bears defense against predators. Try again next time! TRY AGAIN!

HOW DO I USE THE ACTIVITY? Whenever you are confused go to the bottom left corner of the page and it will return you to the home BUTTONS page. Use the star bubbles to answer the quiz questions! When going over lessons always return to home page

CONCLUSION/RESOURCES Polar bears have many different uses in their own bodies that help them survive. The fur and blubber are just a few!
