 Grew up in the midst of Indian warfare  No schools in Kentucky frontier  Zachary studied for a while under tutors  In 1808 was appointed a first lieutenant in U.S army  In 1810 was promoted to captain  In 1810 met Margaret Mackall Smith  Married on June 21,1810  Had I son and 5 girls  2 died as infants

 Troops nicknamed him “old rough and ready”  Hero during and after the war  12 th president of the U.S (1849 – 1850)  Made greatest contribution to country as soldier  Served country for 40 years as soldier and for 16 months as president

 Courage and ability during Mexican war made him a national hero  Never lost a battle  Showed courage while president and in the war  This quite, friendly man was not a military genius but was a good leader  Died 16 months in to being president  Died July 9, 1850, Washington DC
