Technology Open House STScI Technical Training Program Status Mark Abernathy December 2 nd, 2004

Technology Open House Goals of the Technical Training Program Training program was organized to achieve these goals: –Develop a technical training program for STScI that supplements the existing training programs –Provide high quality and more cost effective training options to the Divisions, Centers, and Mission Offices' staff –Provide a training program that will be responsive to staff needs, and will also reflect the strategic technical needs and plans of STScI

Technology Open House Progress to Date Technical Training Program is well established –Established procedures for logistics of arranging/conducting in- house training –Event Registration Tool Initial version provides basic automated registration functions –Extensive web site –Contains information on upcoming courses –Links to local colleges offering on-line courses –Other training resources –Arrangements for getting laptops for those who need them –On-line course survey to get feedback Results in a minute –Strategic plan for future courses This is where we need your input!

Technology Open House More Progress to Date Five courses have been successfully completed: –Intermediate IDL (February) –ZEMAX Software (May) –MS Project (September) 2 sessions –Web Services (October) –Intermediate MS Excel (November) By popular demand another session will be held during the Spring semester! So, how are we doing? –Survey says!…

Technology Open House Question#1 I took the course because:

Technology Open House Question #2 Rate the completeness of this course

Technology Open House Question #3 Rate the material delivery (was it clear and concise?):

Technology Open House Question #4 Rate the overall performance of the instructor(s):

Technology Open House Question #5 The set up time was good and allowed for an efficient use of time and resources:

Technology Open House Question #6 It was easy to know what programs were offered by the OT Training Program

Technology Open House Question # 7 The logistics of this course were good:

Technology Open House Question #8 I found the training useful:

Technology Open House Question #9 I will take another training course offered by the Office of Technology:

Technology Open House Lessons Learned Time of year is important! –January/February are not good months due to possibility of bad weather Future classes will be scheduled for Spring/Fall time periods –IDL class in particular suffered, and there were some valid criticisms due to the delayed start time the 1 st day. The Event Registration tool still has limitations –Currently no automatic tracking of backups for courses that are full –Would also like automatic notification of registration to go to supervisors Need to find better ways to keep staff aware of future courses!

Technology Open House Plans for the Future Currently planning to do two classes in the Spring semester and two in the Fall Will be completing written step by step procedures for organizing training classes –Should reduce the time required by the Technical Training staff even further Get input from the staff and management on future courses and other ways to improve the program –Please feel free to offer suggestions now, stop by in the future or or send me !
