Breakout Session Measuring the Impact of Training and Incentivizing Learning 4 November, 2015

Breakout Session  Question - how should we think about measurement impact during and after training? During training o Pre-test / post-test o Include scenarios (real-time) in the training to assess knowledge and skills Tie training measurement into other indicators (AEFI reporting goes up after training on that topic, limited stock outs are experienced based on training) Tie training into existing supervision checklists (and adding time bound action plans to supervision activities) Plan budget for post training evaluations (6 months, 9 months, etc) Think of evaluation upfront in planning curriculum (so that training is not just content) Coordination between supervisors and trainers (supervising what in fact was trained on) Could use technology to reduce costs with respect to supervision Tie measurement into competencies (should be related) Clarify what we are measuring – skills vs. knowledge Look at measurement of impact – from perspective of the participant as well as the teacher (should look at who is presenting, who is receiving), feedback may give insight into the effectiveness of the curriculum

Breakout Session  Question – are there ways to incentivize people to come for the learning rather than just showing up? Important to thoroughly look at motivation of the learner (truly understand what motivates them) Peer motivation (learn more from one another) Social interaction / network between the learners (however, make sure they are sharing the correct knowledge) Gratitude for reaching their goals (achievement) Have the incentive consistent with the objective – are we paying people as a reward vs. actual learning? Stronger accountability (may not need as many incentives) Stronger skill set (from receiving the training) may lead to a better job Showing appreciation for their work and effort (maybe stronger than per diems) Selection (who is choosing the training participants and why) Make the training interesting / fun / participatory – important motivation Having trainee come back and report on what they have learned Incentives may be different by location, position, etc.

Thank you!
