The Basics WHO?WHAT?WHEN?WHY?WHERE? 1 in 12 United States adults use illicit drugs. A drug is defined as a substance used in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of a disease or as a component of a medication; however, many people only recognize them as chemical substance, such as a narcotic or hallucinogen, that affects the central nervous system, causing changes in behavior and often addiction. The drug trade and drug trafficking was originated when the distribution of drugs, illicit or not, became illegal. The drug trade, an underground network of markets and middle-men, Is held in various farms, streets, and ally-ways. Drugs are often used for medical reasons, to feel a sense of acceptance, or to escape the harsh reality.

Global Challenges The drug trade provides a way for illicit drugs to be transferred from one country to another. The most affected countries are Brazil, China, India, and Mexico. The drug trade travels through 83% of the world’s countries while taking from the global economy. Drugs are an international problem International criminal business that exploits drugs w/criminal elements Drug use among adolescents is sky rocketing Our government, police forces, national air space, and sea space are penetrated by drug criminals Some governments do not work together to halt the smuggling of drugs which causes conflict

Current Situation One out of four surveyed American’s have used illicit drugs at least once in their lives 5000 adults use cocaine for the first time every day million people have tried cocaine Cocaine is the reason for over one half of emergency room visits Men are twice as likely to use drugs as women In California, marijuana is the largest part of the state’s income 51% of accidental deaths are due to heroin 5.5% of inmates have a large business in selling crack cocaine 4.7% of teens and young adults have used crack cocaine at least once The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has ratified: The Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, The Convention on Psychotropic Substances, and The Convention against the Illicit Trafficking of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances

What Does the Future Hold? The use of drugs among teens, young adults, and adults is a growing problem in the United States, and many other countries around the globe. Predictions show us that this number will not be decreased very soon. No matter if the drugs are legal or illegal, there will still be a “need” for them.

What Can YOU Do? Spread awareness by going on a community drug walk/participation in red ribbon week Tell your friends about the consequences of drugs Have posters of alternative activities instead of doing drugs Have police officers come and talk to students and tell stories of past experiences to actually bring this issue to reality
