9 th Grade Science Chapter 25 Section 3 Salts

What is a SALT? A salt is a neutral substance produced from the reaction of an acid and a base. Composed of the negative ion of an acid and the positive ion of a base. One of the products of a Neutralization Reaction Examples: KCl, MgSO 4, Na 3 PO 4

Neutralization Reaction A neutralization reaction is the reaction of an acid with a base to produce salt and water. Example H 2 SO4 + NaOH  NaHSO 4 + H 2 O

Some Common Salts FormulaNameUses NaClFoods, manufacture chemicals NaHCO 3 Foods, antacid CaCO 3 Manufacture paint, rubber KNO 3 Fertilizer K 2 CO 3 Manufacture soap, glass Na 3 PO 4 Detergent NH 4 ClBatteries (dry cell)

Titration Titration is a method of using a known concentration acid or base to find the concentration of an unknown Uses indicators to tell ‘end point’ when neutralization reaction is complete

Some more salts Soaps Organic salts Have a nonpolar end and ionic end Nonpolar end binds to oils/dirt and ionic end dissolves inwater Detergents Have a nonpolar end and ionic end Ionic end is phosphoric or sulfonic acid More soluble in hard water than soaps Esters Like salts formed from reaction of acid with alcohols with OH- Polyesters—long chains of esters used as synthetic fabric
