How is a compound different from a mixture?

Definition of a compound A compound is a substance made from two or more different elements that have been chemically joined. Some examples of compounds are water (H 2 O), table salt (NaCl), table sugar (C 12 H 22 O 11 ) and chalk (CaCO 3 ).

Forming Mixtures 1.parts of a mixture do not change their properties 2.The ratio between the parts may be any amount 3.Energy is NOT taken in or given off when separated 4.Can be separated by simple physical means

Iron and Sulfur If you mix them together, they DO NOT lose their properties Sulfur (S) = still yellow powder Iron (Fe) = still magnetic

By adding heat… Iron and Sulfur will chemically combine AND we will make a compound!

We made a compound!! Fe + S > FeS (Iron Sulfide, the mineral Pyrite) (heat) Iron is no longer magnetic Sulfur is no longer a yellow powder. We created FeS (a compound)
