COMPARATIVE STUDY VICTORIA HAZELL

ARTWORKS

ANNOTATION: BLUE DANCERS, DEGAS Pastel, 67 x 67cm. Color- large part of the painting consists of blue (dresses, background) the shade of blue is also reflected a bit on the ballerina’s skin as well as the backgrounds. Line-consists of a mixture of lines, mainly curved to create the form of the ballerina’s dresses and to give an overall better flow to the picture Shapes- less geometric and more organic; since the painting is more delicate and feminine due to the ballerina’s cascading movements of dresses and background. Spaces- all ballerinas are close together, (leaving little space in between them) giving a sense of harmony to the painting as they all seem to move in harmony and in conjunction.

ANNOTATION: CURTAIN CALL, CLARK LITTLE 8x10 photograph. Shot using a strobe flash as the sun set into the Pacific Ocean. Location: North Shore of Hawaii. Date: 25th April 2013 Line- composed of many curved lines, in order to create the general form and fluidity of the wave Color- largely varies in tones of blue, as seen on the sea and light blue on the wave itself. Tones of white on the wave’s crest. Space- the wave’s crest and its wall are almost touching, creating the aspect of a circle. the space in between the sunset and the wave seems large, yet this gives dimension to the picture. Texture- the picture transmits an idea of harmony as the sea itself is entirely connected to the wave, creating soft fluid textures along its way.

CONTEXT Opera and Ballet, at the time marked presence in Parisian life. Degas painted ‘Blue Dancers’ during the last years of his career, in a studio in lower Montmartre. The painting was produced at the time that he was becoming blind, therefore it is noticeable that the painting does not focus on extreme detail and instead chooses to focus on the mood and movement created by the choice of colours as well.

CONTEXT At the time the picture was shot, he was at a successful moment of his career, when his success was at its highest. He, at the time won photographer of the year and oceans photography award- awarded by the Smithsonian Museum.

THEME One of the main themes presented in Degas’ ‘Blue Dancers’ is the theme of ballet. Since early years, Degas had a passion for ballet and this translated onto the painting. It manages to portray the feminism of the dancers, yet also how strong the passion for the dance itself is.

THEME Largely around the ocean, fluidity and movement of the waves. Involves nature as a main theme as well, due to the ocean and the sunset behind the wave. Clark Little in Waimea Bay, Hawaii
