Color Theory Part 2 Before you begin notes, cut out your color wheel and glue it in your sketchbook. If you are still painting your color wheel, leave space in your sketchbook before today’s notes to glue it in later. You will have time at the end of this presentation to finish your color wheel if needed.

Let’s Review When mixing colors, what is one important thing to remember? What are the 4 steps in proper brush care? What are the 3 primary colors? What 2 colors do you need to combine to make the secondary color green? What 2 colors are combined to create a tertiary color?

Complimentary Color Colors that are opposite on the color wheel. What primary and secondary colors are opposite on your color wheel? (List the 3 groups of complimentary colors.) Complimentary colors create a visual impact and are often used in advertising and team colors. If you want to make something “pop off the page” use its complimentary color for the background.

Cone Color Test Stare at the color for the instructed time and then close your eyes. What happened? If it changed color you saw what is known as an afterimage. Repeat the test again with the paper folded so you see half color paper and half white paper. What happened? Did the color change again? Did the white turn to black? Did it switch sides? * Return the paper

Afterimage Can you predict what flash of color you will see in the cone color test? Answer: Yes Afterimage – The flash of the opposite complimentary color after the cones are saturated in color.

Think of it as looking at a picture negative.

Is it moving? No, it is the afterimage effect of complimentary colors.

Let’s learn more about colors. What are warm colors? ◦ Red, orange, bright yellow What do warm colors do? ◦ Appear to advance, promote hunger, aggression What are cool colors? ◦ Blue, green, dark purple What do cool colors do? ◦ Appear to recede, promote calm

Color 3D Is the middle of the square going up or down?

Analogous This color scheme uses colors that are next to one another on the color wheel.

Analogous images can convey a mood and bring together an image or space.

Today’s Assignment Paint a sample image using analogous colors on the small sheet of water color paper. You will glue this in your sketchbook tomorrow.
