Journal Expectations

Take ownership of your journal it is a personal log of what you have learned the entire 7 th grade year. These are your thoughts, your notes, your interpretations, your findings, your data. They are no one else's.

LABELS! Label...label…label…. This is your work and sometimes a person may not see it as you see it. When you label it clearly we will know what it is. This means data tables, graphs, pictures, designs anything that needs a label should get a label.

Be neat. Neat doesn’t mean perfect it means able to read. Don’t rush through something just to get it done, you may have to go back and re do to make it more readable. Do it neat the first time and you won’t have to worry about the redo.

Table of Contents Table of Contents (TOC) will be set up differently this year. You will have a left and right side of the table of contents. It is your job to make sure your table of contents is up to date. If you are missing a page please come and see me as of to how you can make it up. Always include the page number and the title. Make sure you are placing the after on the right side.

Notice how the TOC is set up in a left and right format. All your right pages will be odd and all your even pages will be even.

It is important that you go ahead and number all the pages in your journal. Yes…ALL! Please make sure your titles match mine. You will do the work but having the same titles will make it easier for class discussion.

Left vs. Right Left: Student Directed Your Questions Brain Storming Making Connections Graphing Summary/Conclusions Real World Connection Graphics and Drawings Right: Teacher Directed Key Questions Hypothesis Procedures Labs/Observations Data Collection Key Words/Class Notes/Class Ideas

Examples of Interactive Notebook Work

Now that we have discussed the journals…let’s set up ours.

Setting up the notebook Cover of the Notebook On the front: – Your name (first and last) – Block # – Mrs. Chamberlain –

Page Numbering! Starting with the first page (inside the cover) number the pages OUTSIDE bottom corner (not near the spine of the book). Use PEN (not pencil) Be careful not to skip numbers (ODD on right, EVEN on left) Number ALL of them (or at least to 150)

Cover Page The cover page is on your own. Please include 7 th Grade Science and the school year Then choose at least 2-3 pictures that remind you of Science. It can be from any of the major areas of Science. Think cells, atoms, animals, chemistry, motion etc.

Table of Contents Pages 2,3 and 4 are dedicated to your table of contents. This should be plenty for the whole year. On page 2, 3, & 4 write TABLE OF CONTENTS in the white blank space. Divide the page into two BIG columns (RIGHT & LEFT) with two smaller columns (PG #) Label columns: PG #, Left Title, Right Title, PG # Use only ONE LINE per entry (you should end at 45)
