Living Things Human Bio 11

Abiotic Objects that are not living and have never been alive.

Biotic Organisms that are living and that were once living (dead ones are included)

Characteristics of Living Things All living things share certain characteristics. If something does not have one of them, it is not living. The GRAMMERS acronym is used: –To be living, it must have all.

Characteristics of Living Things Growth Reproduction Adapt to environment Movement Metabolism Excretion Respond to environment Shape (made of cells)

Activity For each of the following items, decide if it is Abiotic or Biotic.

Activity 1. Silk2. Cotton 3. Leather4. Water 5. Steel Knife6. Sugar 7. Rubber8. Block of wood 9. Canned Beans10. Sand

Think About It... Is fire alive? –It displays all characteristics of life except one: –It is not made of cells!
