OZONE the good the bad and the ugly O3O3O3O3

Poll results 2008

Discovery to recovery U0eNa4GrgU&safety_mode=true&per sist_safety_mode=1&safe=active

What is ozone? O3O3O3O3

Good Ozone  Located in stratosphere  Protects us from UV rays

Good Ozone  Without it: –More skin cancer –Cataracts –stunted plant growth –Weakens human immune system

Good ozone  “hole” was caused by  CFCs (chlorofluorcarbons) –Used in coolants (refrigerators, Air conditioners) –Foam –solvents

Ozone “hole” 2 nd smallest in 20 years!  Nov. 9, 2012

Montreal Protocol  Met in 1987 to phase out CFC’s- worldwide!  Replaced with HFCs

Future ozone levels if no Montreal Protocol re_ozone_layer_concentrations.gif

Ozone hole? What do you think?

Euro version  2008  9:49-m stop at 6:47 ne-layer:-repairing-our-ozone-layer- montreal-protocol.html

BAD OZONE  Located in troposphere  Sunlight + heat + NO x + VOC = bad ozone

Sources of BAD ozone  NOx and VOC are in –Car exhaust –Gasoline vapors –Chemical solvents –Coal electric plants

Problems with bad ozone  Smog  Inflames lung tissues

Ozone Action Days Michigan   The Ozone Action season has ended for There were 20 Ozone Action days this year. Thank you for taking steps to keep the air cleaner in Southeast Michigan!

Ozone action days  Occur in summer  Usually peak in mid afternoon  What NOT to do:  Fill up gas tanks  Use gas engines  exercise
