Outline 9/9/2014Copper Plated Trace Development Update2 Trace plating development status CERN Traces

Trace Plating Status 9/9/2014Copper Plated Trace Development Update3 Provided vendor with GTS-produced laminate with 304 SS on Apical AV – Requested 10 microns (0.0004”) of copper plating – Vendor is not limited by tank size (CERN), but process is more manual Thickness measurements, however seem to indicate plating is not “thick enough”

9/9/2014Copper Plated Trace Development Update4 Copper Plating Sample Testing M. Martchevsky

9/9/2014Copper Plated Trace Development Update5 Resistance and Estimated Cu Thickness M. Martchevsky

Plated Trace Measurements 9/9/2014Copper Plated Trace Development Update6 Physical measure- ments are by a laser vision machine Show a range of ~8 microns thick, with large spread – Does not really match with electrical resistance measurements

9/9/2014Copper Plated Trace Development Update7 Different Vendor for etching/drilling There is a different vendor for the etching and drilling Currently states that it’s not a problem to (selectively) etch copper and stainless over very long lengths Drilling operations are a little different; need some development time for that. – May need to send some sample materials for them to work with before our copper plating is complete

Received two traces from CERN – Hipotted and passed both to 2000V One trace was sent to FNAL for Coil 2 One trace is still here in LBNL – We may not want to use it – (See additional pictures) 9/9/2014Copper Plated Trace Development Update8 CERN Trace, LARP 2 (second trace)

9/9/2014Copper Plated Trace Development Update9 CERN Trace, LARP 2 (second trace)

Summary 9/9/2014Copper Plated Trace Development Update10 Copper plated trace development is still in progress – Copper plating over long lengths of material have not been satisfactory to date – Drilling is another problem to be development; waiting for material Will probably send some material (early samples) for them to practice with We still need to have CERN produce another set of traces for us (for Coil 3) – Copper plated, drilled, etc.
