Beyond the Border

Overview Create a 2D art piece with a composition that has center of interest. Explore the expansions of the main subject matter that is in the inner rectangle branching into the border around it – going beyond the border. The main subject should remain in color, but everything else turns black and white outside the main rectangle. Create a primary and secondary motif. Rhythm and Unity. You will be using mixed media of watercolor and India ink.

Choosing a subject matter Primary Motif Primary motif (subject matter) must be from a photograph. No logos – no cartoons Colorful! Suggestions o Butterflies o Insects o Birds o Sea animals (with flowing fins or tentacles) o Flowers

Placing your subject matter Remember RULE OF THIRDS (Focal point) Place subject matter extending ONLY PART of it onto the border. (Visually, I recommend for 3 sides) - same with background

Drawing your subject matter Shape by Shape o To increase the accuracy of the proportions and perspective o To increase the speed of your drawing o Start with larger shapes first, then work your way to smaller details.

Watercolor Watercolor will be applied first. What will be painted with watercolor? o Your entire subject matter (even the parts that extend onto the border) o Everything inside the border Value changes Layers

India Ink India Ink will be applied last. What will be drawn with India Ink? o Add India ink to subject matter to outline and add details o The areas beyond the border. This part with ONLY be black and white. OPTIONS: can use hatching and cross hatching to show value changes. Line weight o Vary line weight

India Ink History India ink is a simple black ink once widely used for writing and printing and now more commonly used for drawing (comic books, comic strips) Made from soot known as lampblack combined with water to form a liquid. India ink was first invented in China – the source of materials to make the ink was traded from India.

Hatching / Cross Hatching 1:35 Creating value changes through a series of straight and crossed parallel lines.
