 where and when a story takes place  the whole environment in which the character lives  includes time  location  weather  physical setting  atmosphere

 Consider the five senses:  What do the characters see?  What do the characters hear?  Taste? Smell? Touch?

 Check the beginning - primary setting information.  Continue reading - dialogue and events will reveal additional information.

 Setting the stage: background  Critical to:  the development of the plot  to the understanding of the protagonist  or as a means of establishing the mood within the story.

 What is the social environment of a story?  manners  customs  mores  rituals  codes of conduct  How do they affect the characters?
