MATTHEW Matthew 14:1 Not only does this story show the rejection of John but also forecast the Savior’s death.

THE PREEMINENCE OF PETER AND THE APOSTLES With John the Baptist gone and the death of Christ pending, who will shepherd the church? It is answered in the story of the feeding of the five thousand. John 14:13“to be alone” Matthew 14:15-21 He, who had rejected the temptation to make bread at the insistence of Satan to prove to him his divinity, was now going to make bread to feed the hungry multitude.

MATT. 14:19 - LINE OF AUTHORITY! 1. Looking up to heaven (God) 2. He blessed and brake (The Savior) 3. Gave loaves to the disciples (Apostles) 4. The multitudes (members) Matthew 14:21Perhaps 20-30,000 people!

THE PREEMINENCE OF PETER AMONG THE APOSTLES Matthew 14:22-33 Luke is the only one who does not mention the Savior walking on water. However, only Matthew informs us that Peter alone, of the Apostles, had faith to walk on the water.

Matthew 14:30 Peter seems to represent “all men.” Lord save me! The Savior supersedes all miracles! Moses parts the Red Sea, but the Savior walks on water. Jesus is the “New Moses.” Matthew seemed to be saying that Peter, alone was sustained by Jesus Christ to head the earthly church.

Matthew 14:36 They had heard of the miraculous healing of the woman with the blood issue (Matthew 9:20-21). Matthew 15:1-13 Tradition vs. the Higher Law It is clear that the Savior would have his followers reject the rigidness of the Pharisaic rituals and follow higher righteousness.

Matthew 15:21-28 v. 22“gentile woman” v. 26“dogs” = household pet v. 27She was not offended, Commendable persistency! Matthew 15:32-39 Feeding the 4,000, once again foreshadowed the shepherding of the church by the disciples.

MATTHEW 16 - HOW TO GAIN A TRUE TESTIMONY! Matt. 16:1A curious companionship! (Pharisees and Sadducees don’t hang out together) Matt. 16:7-8 Don’t you get it? We don’t need bread! Matt. 16:13-20How testimony is given! Divine testimony is given. Divine testimony comes because of revelation and not by spectacular manifestations or physical evidences (Doctrine & Covenants 8:2-3, 9:8-9).

Matt. 16:14 It is significant that among all the conceptions of the people, there was no perception that he was the Messiah. Neither by word or by deed had He measured up to the popular and traditional standard of the expected deliverer (James E. Talmage, Jesus the Christ, 334). Peter’s prominence among the apostles and also the growing importance of the church.

Matt. 16:18 This is the first time the “Church” is mentioned. Peter is not the rock, the rock is revelation. Peter is the pebble and Christ is the boulder. Matt. 16:19 Keys of the Kingdom to Peter or the right to rule the kingdom of God on earth. Thus the story of Peter’s confession is not only another demonstration of Peter’s prominence among the apostles but also shows the growing importance of the church.

Matt. 16:22-23 “Get thee behind me, Satan,” was identical with that used against Satan. The provocation in the two instances was in some respects similar, the temptation to evade sacrifice and suffering and follow a more comfortable way (James E. Talmage, Jesus the Christ, 338).
