6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Volume 4 Issue 20 February 19 th, 2016 Science Next Week 2/22 The students will complete a Close read of “Heating the Atmosphere.” They will then answer questions based on the reading. 2/23 The students will write the vocabulary from the reading yesterday (conduction, radiation, re- radiation). 2/24 The students will answer the Big Question: How is heat energy transferred and how does it impact weather? 2/25 The students will REVIEW for the test on Unit 4. 2/26 TEST on Unit 4. Science Weekly Review This week completed their comparative essay of the five major world religions. They had to analyze the information and determine which were the most similar and which two had the greatest differences. Social Studies - Next week we will discuss the concept of religious freedom vs religious tolerance and take an in-depth look at areas of the world were neither are found. Students will discuss the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was adopted by the UN on December 10, 1948 as a result of the Second World War and lead to Article 18 of the Constitution. - New Academic Detention Policy The 6 th grade team has sat down and discussed a more effective academic detention policy There is no more Lunch Detention it is now a 9 th Period Detention that is assigned daily for incomplete work. If by the end of the week (Friday’s) students that have been assigned a 9 th Period Detention are not caught up on all of their missing assignments for the week, they will be assigned an Academic Detention for the following Tuesday. When: March 3 rd Where: High School Cafeteria 3:00pm – 4:30pm 2/17 Students used FOSSweb to view how molecules act as they become heated. The students used the whiteboards to show the chain of energy from the heating of the cold water in the vial experiment from last week. 2/18 The students created plans on how they could use heat indicator strips to tell if steel or aluminum heated fastest. 2/19 The students created pictures to show how air receives energy from the Earth’s surface. The students also revisited the question from the beginning of the unit on how heat transfers to Earth’s materials.

6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Math with Ms. York Week in Review This week students are becoming comfortable with new notations of multiplication and division and recognize their equivalence to the familiar notations of the prior grades. For example the expression 2 × b is exactly the same as 2 · b and both are exactly the same as 2b. Similarly, 6 ÷ 2 is exactly the same as 6/2. These new conventions are practiced to automaticity, both with and without variables. Students then were asked to extend their knowledge of GCF and the distributive property from Module 2 to expand, factor, and distribute expressions using new notation (6.NS.B.4). The students were introduced to factoring and distributing algebraic identities. These include: a + a = 2 · a = 2a, (a + b) + (a + b) = 2 · (a + b) = 2(a + b) = 2a + 2b, and a ÷ b = a/b. Volume 4 Issue 20 February 19 th, 2016 Take A Peek At Next Weeks Math!  Monday 2.22 Lesson 15: Read Expressions in Which Letters Stand for Numbers  Tuesday 2.23 Lesson 16: Write Expressions in Which Letters Stand for Numbers  Wednesday 2.24 Lesson 17: Write Expressions in Which Letters Stand for Numbers  Thursday 2.25 REVIEW FOR MID MODULE TEST  Friday 2.26 MID MODULE TEST TEST ON FRIDAY!!!! ELA with Mr. Knowles *All students are required to read at least three AR books every marking period. One of these books has to be based on Social Studies. Our first AR book and quiz will be due on March 9, This past week students finished a quiz on identifying types of figurative language and a response to literature on themes. Students then collaborated effectively by brainstorming ideas on developing a rule to live by. The three categories students may choose from are: healthy habits, bullying, and reduce- reuse-recycle. Students were introduced to choosito.com to assist in their research for their rule. ELA Next Week Next week students will continue Module #2a by researching a rule to live by. From this rule students will write a literary argument essay by following our 9 step writing process. Students will skillfully and logically explain how evidence supports their rule. This essay is due on March 2, You can find Module #2a here: Useful Website For 6 th Grade Modules Middle School Student Council would like to thank all of the chaperones who made the dance a success: Miss York, Miss Smith, Mr. Moltion, Mrs. Dickerson, Mrs. Benton, Mrs. Dann, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Keech, Officer Fuerst, and TJ the DJ!
