Riverside Elementary Media Center Book Order Proposal For Your Consideration

Objectives To support Sustained Silent Reading To select books in 3 areas: Biographies, Graphic Non-Fiction Novels, and Periodicals To find materials to appeal to 3-5 grade boys, who are often reluctant readers

How This Supports School Improvement Plan Efforts concentrated in reading and writing/grammar Different formats of materials for differing learning modalities of students, encourage exploration of other formats Non-fiction reading is one of the goals of LSPI Support learning by encouraging reading for pleasure/information and building pathways to learning

Supports Media Center Mission Supports learning by building bridges to knowledge and creating a passion for reading Meets the needs of all learners with multiple formats Promotes inquiry, stimulates intellectual curiosity, encourages pleasure reading, and develops diverse interests for the enjoyment of life-long learning.

Supports School Mission and Goals Encourages reading for pleasure and reading for information Appeals to a wide range of students, not just 3-5 th grade boys Provides students with high content, engaging materials Leisure reading improves reading/writing, grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills

Selection Principles/Criteria Materials support curriculum, school mission, and goals Meet quality standards for content, presentation, and format Provide high quality/cost ratio Have been positively reviewed by more than one professional publication High interest to students, encouraging circulation Relevant to students Appropriate to developmental level of students

Biographies Allow students to understand historical or scientific concepts by filling personal details of time or situation Students may recognize familiar events and predict outcomes, making them more ready for next phase of learning (Krull) Build critical thinking skill (Meerson, 2000) Directly correlate to Social Studies and Math/Science curriculum

Periodicals High interest articles which pique students’ interest Reluctant readers can read shorter pieces and feel successful Higher level readers can be enriched Provide background information for curriculum (Nist, Kirby, and Ritter, 1983)

Graphic Non-Fiction Particularly attractive to boys Chosen to appeal to students who may not be avid readers, and to appeal to visual learners With accompanied CDs to encourage reading by whole population

Non-Print Resources Great format for auditory learners, students who read below grade level, students with learning differences Will directly support AKS standards

Accelerated Reader Most resources selected will have corresponding AR quizzes These quizzes will be purchased and available for students

Use of Money Type of Resource Money % Periodicals $775 ~30% Graphic Nonfiction & Biographies* $1600 ~65% Companion Resources $125 ~5% * Resources will be focused on graphic nonfiction and graphic biographies. More traditional print biographies will be selected when graphic versions are not available. Processing cost per book is ~$1.24 which includes barcodes, MARC records, Mylar covers and AR markings.

Conclusion Materials encourage all levels and abilities to read Encourage intellectual freedom and stimulation Improve reading skills, ergo comprehension, vocabulary, writing/grammar which enhances performance on standardized tests Encourages life-long reading and learning for information Correlates to AKS standards
