A short history CAS:

In the late 1970s, supercomputing and parallel computing were novel, esoteric technologies Communities were small

Bill Buzbee (LANL) and George Michael (LLNL) headed groups involved in computing research Got together, organized two conferences on high-speed computing

Generally called the Salishan meeting One of them is the DOE “Conference on High-Speed Computing” Still held annually at Gleneden Beach, Oregon, USA

Bill Buzbee, NCAR, ’87: A similar conference might be valuable for the atmospheric sciences community Atmospheric science is a global community — conference would have to be global Decided to hold a conference every couple of years With help from DKRZ and other sites, organized the first “Computing in Atmospheric Sciences” conference

1 st CAS: September 1990 Salishan (Oregon, USA) CAS ’90

Review capability of state-of-the-art models … Purpose CAS:

Discuss enhancements that would characterize the next generation of models and their computational requirements … Purpose CAS:

Review advances in computing technologies … Purpose CAS: See how these advances would impact future model requirements

2 nd CAS: June 1992 Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA CAS ’92

3 rd CAS: 1994 Monterey, California, USA CAS ’94

4 th CAS: 1996 Washington, DC, USA CAS ’96

5 th CAS: 1998 Annecy, France CAS ’98

6 th CAS: 2001 Annecy, France CAS ’01

7 th CAS: 2003 Annecy, France CAS2K3

Gone beyond focus on models Purpose CAS: Scope has become wider End-to-end computing environment

Get updates on enabling technologies (software frameworks, grid computing, portals …) Today CAS:

Look at Terascale data issues (storage management, visualization, availability …) Today CAS:

Review progress and plans from national weather, climate, and research labs worldwide Today CAS:
