2. General Affair Committees What Is the Role of General Affair Committees? Dr. Steve Sheng-Fa Yu

Our Responsibilities  We are here to help students.  We act as advisors for first year students until they choose their thesis advisors.  We review, follow and ( try to ) advice all aspects of student life. 1.General student welfare 2. Academic works (courses/lab rotations)  Monthly meetings between committee members and first year students are mandatory

Our Responsibilities Continue  The General Affair Committee also functions as a mediator handling grievance for senior students.  The Committee interviews exiting (not graduating) students to understand the causes and provide possible remedies.

After decided on a thesis advisor …  Both the advisor and the student need to sign on the “Application for Designating a Thesis Advisor.”  Before the end of their first academic year, students must choose their thesis advisors.

3. Program Courses and Graduation Requirements Dr. Chung-Yi Wu

Since the first semester of academic year 2009, CBMB is divided into two tracks: CB track and MB track.  CB cooperates with the Departments of Chemistry of NTU and NTHU.  MB collaborates with the Institute of Biochemical Sciences of NTU and the College of Life Sciences of NTHU. NEW rules for CBMB in 2009

Compulsory Courses for both CB & MB  Fundamental Chemical Biology and Molecular Biophysics, deliver in NTU (4 credits)  Seminar (4 credits 2 academic years)  Faculty Presentation (1 credit)  Lab Rotation (2 credits 1 academic year)  Colloquium (4 credits 2 academic years)  Elementary Chinese I & II (3 credits each, required for international students only)

Elected Courses  Advanced Chemical Biology II, delivered in NTU (3 credits), is required for the CB students.  Experimental Molecular Biophysics, delivered in AS (3 credits), is required for the MB students. The CB and MB students can inter-select both courses Students are encouraged to take the courses offered by other TIGP programs to fulfill the credits for specialized courses. *Taught in English ONLY*

Graduation Requirements Course Credit:  At least 18 credits for students who hold a M.Sc. Degree (including 12 credits for core course)-before the end of 2nd year  At least 30 credits for students who hold a B.Sc. Degree (including 24 credits for core course)-before the end of 3rd year

Graduation Requirements Thesis Progress Report -The Thesis Progress Report Committee is composed of three to five members -Submit annually after passing qualification exams Minimum Publication Requirements Students have to meet the minimum requirement of publication by their registered university Ph.D Oral Defense Exam One Make-Up Exam is allowed

4. Qualifying Examination Regulations Dr. Tai-Huang Huang

CB track & MB track CB track: NTU, Department of Chemistry NTHU, Department of Chemistry MB track: NTU, Institute of Biochemical Sciences NTHU, College of Life Sciences

For students in CB track Non-thesis Oral Exam:  Students, who have passed all registered courses in the first academic year, are eligible to take Non-thesis Oral Exam.  Students must take first non-thesis oral exam before the first day of their third academic year.  One make-up exam is allowed, but students have to retake the exam after 3 months and before 6 months of the date of the first exam by using the same topic or different topic approved by the committee. Students, who still fail in the second exam, will be disqualified from the Program.

Cumulative Written Exam:  Students can start to take the Cumulative Written Exams after enrolment. The Exam is composed of six major subjects: Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Biology and Molecular Biology.  Each time a student can choose 1 or 2 subjects to take. Grade is rated in three levels: two points for grade A, one point for grade B, and no point for grade C.  Each student has to obtain at least two points by the end of the first year, and obtain 7 points within four years with at least two subjects. Students who fail to meet these requirements will be disqualified, and must withdraw from the doctoral program.

For students in MB track Non-thesis Oral Exam: Same regulation as above. Cumulative Written Exam:  Students can start to take the Cumulative Written Exams after enrolment. Thesis Progressive Report A student, from the third academic year onwards, must annually report a thesis progress to the Committee.

Ph. D. Defense Examination Eligibility:  Complete Course Credits  Pass Qualifying Exam  Do Thesis Progress Report  Reach Minimum Publication Requirements Students, who pass the exam, will be rewarded with a Ph.D. * Only one make-up examination allowed * The make-up examination must be completed before the end of the student’s seventh academic year. The minimum and maximum duration of Ph.D. study are two and seven years, respectively.
