Lompoc Walkability Assessment September 24, 2009

Healthy Lompoc Team Lompoc Valley Community Health Improvement Coalition

Observation: Ideal sidewalks accommodate multiple pedestrians and should allow two wheelchairs to pass.

Observation: Incomplete sidewalks make it challenging for pedestrians to safely navigate the city on foot.

Observation: Incomplete sidewalks and unmarked crossings create challenges for pedestrians and the disabled.

Observation: Railroad crossings present unique challenges for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

Observation: Additional railroad crossing signage geared towards pedestrians and cyclists would be helpful.

Observation: Older neighborhoods were not required to have complete sidewalks for pedestrians.

Observation: A lack of clearly marked bike lanes force cyclists to use unsafe paths to get around town.

Observation: Many alleys are missing ramps, this creates a challenge for people with strollers and the disabled.

Observation: Many streets are missing a sidewalk or have incomplete sidewalks on one side of the street.

Observation: New sidewalks added to this street greatly increased the safely of children walking to school.

Observation: To be effective street signage must be kept visible and not be hidden by trees or hedges.

Observation: Too much space between crosswalks encourages pedestrians to cross the street at unmark areas.

Observation: No sidewalks on either side of the streets make it dangerous for children walking to and from school.

Observation: New signage in “hi-vis” neon yellow is more visible than traditional safety yellow.

Observation: Multi-striped crossing areas are more visible than tradition two striped cross walks.

Observation: Crosswalks in high foot traffic areas near schools need access ramps and sidewalks on both sides.

Observation: This busy intersection has nice new signage but would benefit from updating the 2 stripe crosswalk.

Observation: Cars parked blocking the sidewalk create a hazard for pedestrians forcing them to walk in the street.

Observation: Simple improvements can create a much safer and walkable community for residents of Lompoc!
