BOC Role Delineation Workshop Nina Walker Jan C. Lauer 2009 BOC Athletic Trainer Regulatory Conference

Role Delineation Study  Identifies essential knowledge and skills for the athletic training profession and serves as a blueprint for exam development  Created to ensure the certification examination has content validity The BOC exam must reflect the tasks performed in the range of practice settings throughout the United States.

Role Delineation Study  The study also validates importance, criticality, frequency and relevance to practice for both broad content areas and tasks.

Anatomy of the Role Delineation Study  Introduction  Classification of Domains, Tasks, Knowledge and Skills  Defining and Validating scope of practice Survey results  Appendix-References, Survey

Six Performance Domains Prevention Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis Immediate Care Treatment, Rehabilitation and Reconditioning Organization and Administration Professional Responsibility

Domains….  Are divided into tasks and each task has a knowledge and skill statement.  Each performance domain and task statement is evaluated by it’s importance, criticality, frequency and point in career.

Domains….  Each domain contains a research based description of the area.  It begins with a summary of athletic training literature defining the domain and describing current practice and trends.

Tasks…  Each task has a comprehensive definition as to how it will be accomplished.  It also contains a list of appropriate knowledge and skill sets to successfully accomplish.

Why use Role Delineation Study?  RD 5 is a guide of knowledge and skills required to function as a competent athletic trainer.  Gold Standard

How does this help with regulatory and reimbursement efforts?  Guide for regulatory language  Guide for reimbursement efforts with third party payers  Educational tool for legislators, educators and other health care providers, etc.

RD 5 – information utilization  Can be utilized to answer questions by doctors, case managers, workers compensation, legislators, insurance companies, healthcare providers, lobbyists, general public, etc…

The Future- RD6  Enhanced readability, lay terms  Going Green! Electronic with potential hyperlinks for reference material Real time adjustments for items like position statements  Content adjustments to include variety of practice settings
